I\u2019m not getting married, and I\u2019m not the doctor, so save your relief \/joy over my marital status for a later episode.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-63c2614487454921944de7f77ae9e531\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">I was THERE, that\u2019s my point here. One of the women asks around the table and says: Would you rather hear the ugly truth about what\u2019s going wrong in your relationship, or would you rather be lied to?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-0b7ee9c1eb1e40f48e2bbd5f3a8fdcb2\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">And everyone, men and women both,\u00a0<em>UNANIMOUSLY<\/em>\u00a0say they want to hear the truth. That sure,\u00a0<em>other\u00a0<\/em>people prefer comforting lies in their love life, but they\u2019re made of sterner stuff. They can handle pain, rejection, arguments, as long as it\u2019s The Truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-6e1456e89fca4bc7b367334f8d89703b\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">(lol)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-ea20779d5cfc471f91c32a85de833825\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">The room comes to me and I say: \u201cWell, I like to\u00a0<em>think\u00a0<\/em>I\u2019d like to hear the truth, because that fits my self-image. But I\u2019m very selective about what I choose to believe in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-9bb7e081b6954a87b1e27aabe89eed08\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">And then I just kind of tilt my head, like it\u2019s the punchline to a Norm MacDonald joke. Everyone sort\u2019ve\u2026 looks at each other. Maybe I was in a unique gathering, a convention of the world\u2019s most level headed and reasonable people.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-45a7f09279f44009a6b4ab0ec5e205b5\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">But it\u2019s more likely that every single person in that room was lying to themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-f5477eaf340d417f96ce00dfc091616f\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Look, nobody\u00a0<em>wants<\/em>\u00a0to be lied to. But very few people are willing to believe things that cut against our identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-67473d40cde344e9b9e6e5c0a67013ca\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Everything is nasty, brutish, and emotional.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-65c4876131154b8d9c68eea4789bfee3\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Anyone who considers themselves an exception, a \u201crational person\u201d in an age where there are reams and reams of information out there is probably a liar. Most of your \u201crational ideas\u201d about culture and how the world works is a reaction to\u00a0<em>what<\/em>\u00a0you hear,\u00a0<em>where\u00a0<\/em>you\u2019re from and\u00a0<em>what\u00a0<\/em>your circumstances are.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-3c3c161f006f45dbbba27ad4029830a3\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">You can make \u201crational decisions\u201d based on reading Pepe LeCentipede\u2019s Alt-Right Blogstravaganza and have shockingly different opinions than someone who reads Mother Jones even if you\u2019ve got the same thought process.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-a249b0167ebd481db9854bb8cab2c2f4\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">People who are DEAD SET against government spending and pitch a fit against disaster relief are suddenly all for it when a hurricane knocks over the house next door to them. People who want to build a giant wall and deport all the gay people suddenly change their tune when their son is a gay Mexican vegetable farmer. Politicians that filibuster Supreme Court nominees get elected President and are shocked and dismayed when the same thing happens to them. Whoops.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-b8fca1ff88254de4a0455e6588c582ca\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Personal politics is a reflection of how we\u00a0<em>feel<\/em>\u00a0about the world. It has to be, because no matter what happens to technology, nobody really experiencing every facet of the country. You might read some never ending patronizing blogpiece on how things are going in East Kentucky, but odds are good you don\u2019t have anything in common with that experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-7bae59a99eab47c2881360982abec82e\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Our purchasing choices are just as emotional. What we buy reflects how we feel about ourselves. We can think up the rational reasons to justify it later, but the emotion is always at the ROOT of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-b85241c192bf48d7972467084bf51ea8\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">That\u2019s why when we sell something, we need to be simple, memorable, and emotional.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"block-0937fdd0e03a4a16af1a95df87603e52\" class=\"notion-heading\"><span id=\"0937fdd0e03a4a16af1a95df87603e52\" class=\"notion-heading__anchor\"><\/span><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\"><strong>Start Writing Before You Make The Product<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"block-11217f2e96324c548527a8e008601341\" class=\"notion-image page-width\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/super-static-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/10c18fe4-fb17-42e6-9ca4-e50c71208c2b\/images\/e3001964-dcdf-4ee1-8174-4686c1f15b69.jpg?w=750&amp;f=webp\" type=\"image\/webp\" media=\"(max-width: 546px)\" \/><source src=\"https:\/\/super-static-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/10c18fe4-fb17-42e6-9ca4-e50c71208c2b\/images\/e3001964-dcdf-4ee1-8174-4686c1f15b69.jpg?w=750\" media=\"(max-width: 546px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/super-static-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/10c18fe4-fb17-42e6-9ca4-e50c71208c2b\/images\/e3001964-dcdf-4ee1-8174-4686c1f15b69.jpg?w=1500&amp;f=webp\" type=\"image\/webp\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/super-static-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/10c18fe4-fb17-42e6-9ca4-e50c71208c2b\/images\/e3001964-dcdf-4ee1-8174-4686c1f15b69.jpg?w=1500\" alt=\"image\" width=\"1500\" \/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div id=\"block-e84df90494e94ac7ba515bda497835ff\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Often, we do things in the opposite order the customer is going to experience it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-dff799a9aca34c63ba2275dc6f5fb73a\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">We do research the customer will NEVER see, we create a product the customer won\u2019t see until they buy in, and then we write the sales letters, the emails, all this stuff that seems like \u201csupporting material\u201d but is where the money actually meets the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-dc4cf3573be84b9ab65149d9b07e5650\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">When we write the sales material first, we keep our priorities where they need to be: on making the strongest product possible. When you\u2019re actually experiencing the sales process and writing it, you\u2019ll be thinking of ways to make things easier, faster, and less expensive. And you\u2019ll make changes to your product based on that!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-ee65e10ec69a447ebc46139687495232\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Seriously, why do we always do things backwards? <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-b00b4cc64f174504bc91f8074597ffc4\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">We do all this research that the customer will never even know about, create a product that they won&#8217;t see until they hand over their money, and THEN we write the sales letters and emails &#8211; aka the stuff that actually matters. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-47adf63354564e8d89610978c0a6d18e\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">It&#8217;s like we&#8217;re intentionally making things harder for ourselves. Let&#8217;s try to do things in the order that makes sense for the customer, shall we? It might just make the whole process a little less confusing and a lot more profitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-73fc32f8c7af44d3925f5d7d1aa4da96\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Okay, here&#8217;s a little bonus for you. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-bf1e4d80373141a3a4e67d2ef42b5b04\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">By writing the sales material first, you can test the conversion for your product before you even start selling it. Your loyal customers can read your sales letter, get excited, and click that buy button before you&#8217;ve even lifted a finger. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-ade2eb533ce847609fe9013878144eec\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Of course, once they hit that big red button, you better have something to show for it. Add them to a waiting list or throw them a bone with a deep discount or even a free copy. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-acc8956c60654bdc98de1d913a20f270\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">And hey, it&#8217;s also a good way to test your traffic sources. If your test is a total flop, at least you saved yourself a ton of money and a headache.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"block-0dc020d4a33f4ae596bf04e13b76b09f\" class=\"notion-heading\"><span id=\"0dc020d4a33f4ae596bf04e13b76b09f\" class=\"notion-heading__anchor\"><\/span><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\"><strong>Write Headlines That Work<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"block-ccd747bc74f3496a9ae00e51920a7da3\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Listen, we all have different methods for writing headlines. Personally, I leave it until the end. I mean, when you&#8217;re writing something long-form, you&#8217;ve got a lot to say. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-bfbdfccda41e44408c3233bd734ba8e2\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">As you&#8217;re brainstorming all the benefits, you might just stumble upon a clever turn of phrase that works as a headline. Or, you know, it could at least be a contender for a headline. Either way, it&#8217;s always good to have options.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-bb1b16397ac746c69c5d28aae84e76a2\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Listen up, people. Here&#8217;s the difference between mediocre copy and seriously good copy (or mediocre anything and seriously good anything else): the willingness to trash your first idea. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-d298858de17242ea830048fe2556adc2\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">When you&#8217;re willing to put in the work and come up with twenty different headlines before finding the best one, your copy becomes electric. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-3b45a7f09e57492d84f2aaab71d58a14\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Or hey, test out three or four super headlines against each other. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-70aa6ab0cb3e4312b38f048db5e16630\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Just remember, don&#8217;t be afraid to get rid of that first idea. It&#8217;s usually not the best one anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-ca89a6a807ec41d39fb4deaa5c20b779\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Listen, if you want anyone to stick around, you better make sure your headline is top-notch. Seriously, it should take up at least half of your energy, even if you&#8217;re writing the next great American novel. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-8844306642904c469220c9b33b19bc16\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">After all, if they lose interest in the headline, they&#8217;re not going anywhere else with you. So don&#8217;t skimp on the headline, even if you&#8217;re writing a fucking masterpiece. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-cc48cb09f6b34d1f8d423a38ed0e8eff\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">It&#8217;s worth the effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-4f82dce88f744ffe8a750ed86919a804\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Okay, here&#8217;s what you need to do. Think about all the benefits your product offers and jot them down. Bullet points are your friend here. Make them suspenseful, bold, and sales-oriented. Once you&#8217;ve got all your benefits and proof elements written down, rank them. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-6a1bf397666a49ecbf17929681684ac7\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Your top 2 or 3 concepts should go into the headline &#8211; spend a few hours working on them and comparing your best options. Trust me, it&#8217;ll be worth it in the end.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"block-f1e04e90e1864d3fb2f973819ac4ff8f\" class=\"notion-heading\"><span id=\"f1e04e90e1864d3fb2f973819ac4ff8f\" class=\"notion-heading__anchor\"><\/span><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\"><strong>Introduce Yourself Powerfully<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"block-8443ada50a8f42e4ae1f6ad114b7e006\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">How long should your copy be? Well\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-360d0751deec4b61bb25d0d35ff46618\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Size doesn\u2019t matter. Cover the main objections, state the case your your product, and don\u2019t ever, ever be boring. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-d441ec8367614b53a3c1f47b39c4da0d\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Every single paragraph in your copy is an opportunity for your potential customer to say \u201cto hell with this\u201d and go back to reading Facebook.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-dd67823660a14701b637faf64f725e50\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">In fact, I like to imagine that at every paragraph, my prospect stops scanning the page and asks themselves \u201cwhy am I still reading this?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-ad00e3b43389488f8a8a0de12fd9f673\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\"><strong>And your work has got to have an answer.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-92c1c875adc34a058ae0b43272695540\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Whether that\u2019s a suspenseful story\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-0f07b72a223c4ac68c59d6e14ae5d5f7\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">An amazing benefit\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-b8b4e61b308f44f2abe5c9a830a7a303\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Explaining the pain, risk, and humiliation they\u2019re going to face if they tune you out\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-9c243227814445f68bca51bd84b75a69\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Or explaining the potential rewards if they stay, read, and buy.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-955f065aef7443e4aea594da7b017770\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Every paragraph needs to be exciting and entertaining. If you can look at one paragraph and say that it\u2019s \u201cboring\u201d, you need to rewrite it until it shines.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-aa233331aa2543b4b3f77806082ad72c\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">There\u2019s no room to dawdle if you approach your copy this way. You\u2019re going to keep people focused and keep them reading\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"block-cd8a3df34d0c40ddaee593891df1a829\" class=\"notion-heading\"><span id=\"cd8a3df34d0c40ddaee593891df1a829\" class=\"notion-heading__anchor\"><\/span><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\"><strong>You Do That By Keeping It Simple<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"block-138de66239704f69818a57d136959b89\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">This isn\u2019t a place for you to show off your intellect. I bet you\u2019ve NEVER bought anything thinking \u201cwow, you know, I was on the fence, but that salesman was so SMART. I mean, I think he was smart\u2026 he used big words, and he talked for SUCH A LONG TIME.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-8bdd4172ea6a4a0abec8ba7884f22ec7\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Keep your paragraphs short. We\u2019re talking three or four lines a pop. And keep it readable, too. If you read it out loud and there are words that are making your stumble, don\u2019t publish it. When you\u2019re rewriting, lower your word count.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-260062bf8bb544c4bb92a8a58ef545c7\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Remove redundancies and exaggerations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-20ae17d54254448c8b7b6f17bbd0cf4f\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">Long copy isn\u2019t impressive \u2013 it\u2019s just LONG.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"block-b8d0e381342243a9838df4087d131941\" class=\"notion-heading\"><span id=\"b8d0e381342243a9838df4087d131941\" class=\"notion-heading__anchor\"><\/span><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\"><strong>Think Emotionally About Evidence<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"block-773f26087910475489df4eeee7e3124a\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">We take in evidence emotionally, and we do it for emotional reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-440bf83cf3bb4d4697616aec9e9f1ce1\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">People online nowadays shop for truth like they shop for toys on Amazon. There are so many different things happening in the world that you choose what you want to believe and have plenty of evidence that points towards it being real. Or real enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-1740e3982c8b4eb7a431072fd9eefd4e\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">The issue isn\u2019t the VERITY of the evidence, it\u2019s the COMPLETENESS of the evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-2047b8c8db1a4735b4165a33d9046f3f\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">And who has the time to have a complete understanding of more than a couple of subjects? Even the President doesn\u2019t have that \u2013 he\u2019s got a small army of advisers who give him the broad strokes so he can make a decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-40fca5c869e242358f8330c5ed2de254\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">So what about your proof elements? Are you just showing people a name and a picture? Or does your testimonial have a real story involved that speaks to people\u2019s needs, questions, objections? Do they know who this person is? Are they a respected expert in the field and are they talking about something that\u2019s actually relevant to your product?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-539359314aba43869da6af51274130c9\" class=\"notion-text\">\n<p class=\"notion-text__content\"><span class=\"notion-semantic-string\">I could go on forever. But this applies to everything \u2013 your design, your graphics, your followup sequences. Do they make people\u00a0<em>want\u00a0<\/em>to believe in you?
